DIY Painting Tips - 4 Things You Need to Know

Four DIY painting tips that every home decorator needs to know

DIY Painting Tip 1. If you need to stop for lunch in the middle of your painting, then you can stop your brushes and rollers from being ruined from paint drying on them. Wrap your brush or roller cover in cling wrap and put it in the fridge. When you are ready to start painting again just get it out of the fridge, unwrap the cling wrap and you are ready to go.

DIY Painting Tip 2. If you are going to buy a premium paint finish, then don't try and save on your brushes and rollers. Whilst it might be tempting to try and save some money this way, you will not be happy with the results. The quality of your brushes and rollers will make a big difference to the final look of your job.

DIY Painting Tip 3. When looking for paint color ideas, it is really worth the extra expense to get some sample pots and paint them on your walls to see how your paint color ideas look in that room. Don't forget to undercoat over these patches before you paint or you could end up with patches in your final finish.

DIY Painting Tip 4. When you go to the store with your paint color ideas, make sure that you know what brand of paint your colors are from. There can be 10 different colors all with the same name, but belonging to different paint companies, make sure you ask for the right one.

I hope that these painting tips wills help with your home painting jobs.

5 DIY Painting Tips That Every DIY Painter Needs to Know

DIY Painting Tip 1. Buy top quality paint when you can. It will apply better, last longer and be so much easier to clean. Instead of painting every 5 years, you will only be painting every 10 years.

DIY Painting Tip 2. Preparation... Preparation is the key to everything. This is where you want to pay the most attention and where you should be spending the most time with your project. Use quality fillers and give them plenty of time to dry and then spend the time for proper sanding. It will all pay off in the final look, especially where you are using gloss paints.

DIY Painting Tip 3. Brushes and Rollers! Don't skimp on the brushes and rollers that you are going to use. Cheap brushes and cheap roller covers, will you give you a cheap looking finish. Buy the best you can afford, and if you wash them properly, they will last you for many DIY painting jobs.

DIY Painting Tip 4. Mold. If you have mold problems, which will normally happen in wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries. You will need to treat the walls of the room with a mold killer, or household bleach will do the trick too. Wipe down all the walls, not just the areas where there are visible mold spores. Once you are finished make sure you wipe everything down with clean water.

DIY Painting Tip 5. Not sure if you have water based or oil based paint on your walls? There is a simple test to find out. Put some methylated spirits on a cloth and rub it over the paint. If you get color on the cloth, then the paint is water based, if you don't get any color then it is an oil based paint.

I hope you have found these DIY painting tips useful.

DIY Painting Tips - How to Get Your Paint Color Selection Right

Are you having problems with your paint color selection?

Do you find that you sometimes ask for the wrong paint color at the store?

Or you get home with your new paint color selection and find that it doesn't look how you thought it would in the room you are painting?

Do you go to the paint shop and then can't remember the name of the paint color you have chosen, or find that the paint color you have chosen isn't available in the paint you want to use?

Not only can this cause frustration and stress, but it can end up costing you a whole lot of extra money!

Following these simple tips on paint color selection, will make things a lot easier, less stressful, and can even save you money too!

When you are picking your paint colors, your first step should be to decide on the brand and quality of paint that you are going to use and then make your paint color selection from the colors that are available for that brand of paint. Whilst many colors can be put into different brands, that is not the case for every color, you will save yourself a lot of frustration and disappointment if you make your paint color selection from those colors that you know can go into the brand of paint you wish to use.

Once you have chosen the paint colors you want to use, then get them mixed up into sample pots and use these in the room you want to paint. Paint colors can look very different in your own home as opposed to how they look in the store or on the color chart. The color of your carpet, furniture or even the colors outside your house can all affect the way your paint color ideas will look on your wall.

Once you have made your paint color selection, then write them down. Or better yet bring in the sample pots that you have used to the store. You would be amazed at the number of people who go to get their paint colored and then ask for the wrong paint color because they can't remember the exact paint color name.

Make sure that you ask for the complete paint color name, if the paint color you want is called Antique White U.S.A., then that is what you need to ask for. Don't just ask for Antique White, or you will end up with the wrong color and waste money. The same goes for Color Bond Colors. Make sure you state that it is a Color Bond Color.

Most importantly, you need to remember which brands paint color chart your paint color ideas have come from, paint companies can all have a paint color with the same name, yet these will all be slightly different paint colors.

Keep these points in mind when you are next selecting your paint colors and you will save yourself time and money.

DIY Painting Tips - Paint Selection

Top quality paints not only apply easier and give you better coverage but they last for longer and are easier to clean than cheaper low grade paints. Buy the best that you can afford with your budget - it will pay for itself in the long run your paint selection will make a big difference and make your DIY painting job easier.

ACRYLIC PAINT
Acrylic or Water based paint, is the most commonly used paint for walls and ceilings throughout your house. The paint is fast drying, often nearly odor free, and nowadays it has very low VOC levels

OIL BASED PAINT
Oil Based or Enamel paint is most commonly used for doors, skirts and windows, this is a hard wearing paint, but it does have a high odor level, a long drying time and it will yellow with age. It also needs to be cleaned up with mineral turps or thinners and often has high levels of VOC's.

WATER BASED ENAMEL
Water based Enamel is fairly new to the market place and is a great way to achieve the high gloss look of an enamel with out the smell, long drying time, or the yellowing effect that you get from an enamel over the long time, though it does not have the hardness of a traditional oil based product.

FLAT PAINTS
Flat paints are most commonly used on ceilings, some people still use them on their walls for the hiding power, though I would recommend a low sheen for walls as a flat will mark and scuff very easily and is not as washable as the higher gloss level paints.

LOW SHEEN/ACCENT PAINTS
Low Sheen paint is most commonly used for walls. It is suitable for all rooms in your house except, laundries, kitchens and bathrooms, it is washable and still has some decent hiding power.

SEMI GLOSS/SATIN PAINTS
Semi Gloss paints are much more washable than low sheen or flat finishes but it does not have the same hiding power as low sheen or flat paints, it is commonly used in Kitchens, Laundries and Bathrooms because of its higher moisture resistance and ease of cleaning.

GLOSS PAINTS
Gloss paints are mostly used for doors, architraves, and windows. This paint has a high moisture resistance level and is highly washable. It will show up any imperfections in the surface, so it is important to make sure that you have prepared the surfaces properly first before applying it.

Hopefully I have made your next paint selection easier for you.

DIY Painting Tips - How to Get Your Paint Color Ideas Matched Properly the First Time

Can't find the paint color you want to use to paint with in the store?

Did you find a great paint color idea in a magazine but you cant find it at your local paint store?

Have you forgotten what paint color you used in a room, but want to use it again or need to do a touch up?

Then head down to your local paint store. Nearly all paint stores now have computer color matching for the DIY painter. Simply take the item that has the paint color idea that you want to have matched to the store.

If you want to match a paint color that is painted on your wall and you don't have a sample of this color anywhere else, then you may have to cut a small piece out of your wall with the paint color on it. This can be easily patched and repainted later. You will need a piece approximately one inch by one inch in size.

If you are lucky, then you will still have some of the paint left over in an old can or maybe even some dried paint on the outside of the can. If you have some paint left, then do not, if at all possible bring the wet paint into the store to be matched.

Paint a sample onto some plain white card, two coats of paint will give you best results, and allow it to dry fully before bringing it into the store. If you paint it onto something that is not white, then the underlying color can affect the way the color will look. If you do bring in a wet sample, then your paint color match will not be as accurate as there will not be time for the sample to fully dry in the store even with the use of a hair dryer. You will get far better results if you bring a fully dry sample every time. This is especially important if you have wet oil based paint that you want matched.
